Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza at the beginning of October announced that the state would release 700 000 hectares (ha) of land for South Africans to cultivate.

This is in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa's commitment, during his State of the Nation address in February, that state-owned agricultural land would soon be released for farming. 

The land to be released includes 896 farms measuring 700 000ha of under-utilised or vacant state land in the following provinces:
