1. The ANC had their worst election since it was registered as a political party

The ANC, in control of the national government since 1994, dipped below 50% in popular support for the first time ever. It has lost outright control of a host of municipalities and metropolitan municipalities and will have to find common ground with smaller parties if it wants to govern. The ANC's popular support settled at just above 46%.
