Details of how the State Security Agency (SSA) was used to fight factional battles in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) emerged at the Zondo commission into state capture last week.

The testimony stems from a high-level review panels’ report into the agency undertaken in 2018, headed by former Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi, which found how a parallel agency was set up within the SSA to serve former President Jacob Zuma’s personal interests.

During his testimony at the Zondo commission, Mufamadi furthermore alleged that the establishment of the African News Agency in 2015 was a project aimed at “countering negative local and international perceptions of the country, Zuma and the SSA”.
