The 2021 municipal elections marked a change in Soweto: Aside from the fact that many voters stayed away from the polls, those who made their mark actively started voting for opposition parties - predominantly ActionSA.

Soweto has 600 000 of the City of Johannesburg's 2.2 million voters and therefore represents more than 25% of the city's electorate.
