President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to meet with the National Coronavirus Command Council this week, amid rising numbers of Covid-19 infections.

Covid-19 infections have skyrocketed in South Africa in recent weeks, following the discovery of the Omicron variant which is believed to be more transmissible. 

News24 spoke to two health experts about whether there is a need for stricter lockdown restrictions in South Africa, and whether the Omicron variant leads to a more severe disease.
