For 16 years, Jacob Zuma has resorted to increasingly far-fetched conspiracy claims to attack the State's corruption case against him. But, as Karyn Maughan writes, increasingly desperate plot accusations can never be a basis to stop a valid prosecution.

For former president Jacob Zuma, any attempt to hold him accountable for his actions and decisions must be tainted by dark and illegitimate motives.

Whether it was then Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's failed efforts to get answers from him about his relationship with the Gupta family or Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo's aborted attempts to ask him about the alleged state capture linked to his presidency, Zuma has treated any request that he account for his conduct with suspicion and contempt.
