The Judicial Services Commission has finally voted for the impeachment of Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe, 13 years after he tried to swing a Constitutional Court ruling in favour of Jacob Zuma – but it is still inexplicably stalling on recommending his suspension, writes Karyn Maughan.

Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe has become the first judge in democratic South African history to face impeachment for gross misconduct – but, at least for now, he remains in office.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Judicial Services Commission confirmed that its majority had decided to support the recommendations of a Judicial Conduct Tribunal – led by Judge Joop Labuschagne – that Hlophe face impeachment for trying to influence Justices Bess Nkabinde and Chris Jafta to rule in favour of then-ANC president Jacob Zuma in a crucial 2008 case.
