After qualifying as a marine biologist and attaining a PhD in zoology - working on, among others, Marion island in the sub-AntarcticMariette Wheeler decided to pursue her passion for teaching. This week Wheeler - a life sciences teacher at Protea Heights Academy in Cape Town - was named the country's teacher of the year. She speaks to James de Villiers about how she initially didn't want to be a teacher or study biology, and what keeps her going during the long hours.
