The mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Eugene Johnson, has been in office for only seven months in a city that has had a drought for seven years. Johnson speaks to Malibongwe Dayimani about why the municipality has an "inherited water crisis", and how she cut her teeth in the labour movement during the height of apartheid. 

As Nelson Mandela Bay - South Africa's fifth-largest metropolitan - faces looming water shortages, the municipality's mayor, Eugene Johnson, believes previous administrations didn't do enough to address the crisis. 

But Johnson, 59, says this is not the time for finger-pointing; instead, the administration needs to get to work.
