The chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC) on Vaccines, Professor Barry Schoub, says with the wisdom of hindsight, South Africa should have perhaps concluded bilateral agreements for Covid-19 vaccines sooner. Schoub speaks to News24 about why he has no hard feelings with the scientists he disagreed with, why he does not believe the country is falling behind with vaccinations, what might previously have caused problems with scientists serving in the MAC.

Professor Barry Schoub has been trying - unsuccessfully - to retire for the past 10 years.

But as soon as the 75-year-old virology professor proverbially hung up his cloak to embrace his golden years, he was called upon to advise on another one of the world’s most pressing health crises.
