Published by Umuzi, The Promise by Damon Galgut tells a story centred on a family funeral. As a result of the death, the Swart family finds itself fighting over a piece of farmland just outside of Pretoria. Below is an excerpt.

He’s just come out of the shower when the phone rings. It’s not his apartment and the call is probably not for him and there are a few people he’s actively trying to avoid, but he goes ahead and answers anyway. A feeling he has inside, like an outline of something.
