Martin Plaut in his book 'Dr Abdullah Abdurahman: South Africa's first elected black politician' delves into why the leader of the African Political Organisation (APO), Dr Abdullah Abdurahman who was the first person of colour to be elected on the City Council in Cape Town in 1904 was written out of history. He served the city for 36 years and was later a member of the Provincial Council. Upon his death in 1940, Cape Town ground to a halt.
