In 1969, John Schlapobersky, who was a student at Wits at the time was arrested for opposing apartheid. He was tortured and placed in solitary confinement and eventually deported. 'When they came for me' is his memoir of what happened to him at that time and how he managed to survive the ordeal. In the extract below, Schlapobersky describes his interrogation.

I was escorted up an imposing flight of stairs and into a big stone building. I was cold and trembling again but would not let them see my body’s panic. We turned past a series of offices and along a corridor that led to a large open space with small cell-like rooms leading off it. I assured myself that they had taken me out of prison because they had discovered their mistake. I told myself that I would be allowed to see a lawyer now and could answer their questions and then go home.
