News24's lifestyle editor, Herman Eloff, attended Damon Galgut's discussions at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. What he observed from the wooden benches of the NG Church was a profoundly private writer caught in a whirlwind of blessings and curses.

When Damon Galgut won the Booker Prize last year for The Promise, he joined a short and esteemed list of local authors who had achieved the same success. His name is now ranked next to that of JM Coetzee, who begrudgingly he often gets compared to, and Nadine Gordimer.
