News24's books editor Shaun de Waal in discussion with Deon Meyer about his latest novel in the Benny Griessel series, The Dark Flood.
Speaking to Deon Meyer about his new novel, The Dark Flood (Hodder & Stoughton), which has just come out in English (the Afrikaans version is Donkerdrif), I have to clear something up.
In The Dark Flood, Meyer’s detective, Benny Griessel, says he has been sober for seven months now. It's in the first Griessel novel, Devil's Peak, that he starts fighting his alcoholism. Devil's Peak was first published in 2007 (2005 in Afrikaans), and I've gone back to the start to read the Griessel novels in order, but I haven't yet got to a relapse. So, I ask Meyer, he's referring to a relapse that must have happened about two novels ago?
