US Senator Kamala Harris took on vice president Mike Pence in a vice presidential debate on Wednesday night but many voters might have been left disappointed if they thought they were going to see Harris cross-question Pence, writes John Matisonn.

The match-up was made for Hollywood: US Vice President Mike Pence is an ultra-conservative, white, male, evangelical Republican from middle America, while Senator Kamala Harris is the Baptist daughter of a Hindu Indian mother and a Jamaican father, the wife of a Jew, from liberal, tolerant San Francisco.

The resulting debate might have disappointed Harris fans. The former California Attorney-General is known for her surgical cross-questioning, and Pence, as head of the task force for the Covid-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 210 000 Americans, would be a good target.
