Before packaging is removed from food products, the issue of food waste needs to also be considered, write Nicola Jenkin and Lorren de Kock.

The topics of single-use plastic and excess packaging have covered many press inches over recent years. 

While South Africans use about 3.5 million tonnes of packaging each year and approximately 50% is collected for recycling, we certainly could do with reducing it – whether as manufacturers, retailers or consumers.
