B-BBEE has not delivered meaningful empowerment, even in business, writes Mlondi Mdluli, and so the DA should be commended for scrapping it as a policy.

Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) or more recently known as Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) is a race-based growth strategy that was formulated by the governing party to address the racialised inequality in South Africa.

However, the policy has failed dismally to empower its intended beneficiaries over the years. Instead of fixing the damage, racial inequality has been on the rise, making South Africa the most unequal country in the world.
