In recent congressional hearings into Afghanistan, Republicans used their time to goad the generals into blaming President Joe Biden, and Democrats expended equal energy diverting blame to previous Republican presidents, writes the author.

America's generals have trod a fine line trying to defend themselves during congressional hearings on Afghanistan while not calling their commander-in-chief a liar, writes John Matisonn.

America's top generals declared the 20-year Afghan war was a "strategic failure", that there was no clear exit plan, and that "we were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan".

Doing the rounds of congressional committee testimony and media interviews, the Pentagon's top brass admitted the sudden collapse of the government "took us by surprise", and at least one general even questioned whether a military response to 9/11 was the right option.
