The two best-known conservative Democratic senators opposed to Biden's $3.5 trillion plan - Joe Manchin of coal-producing West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona - have considerable financial incentives to go along with the lobbyists, writes John Matisonn

Joe Biden's biggest test as president has arrived at a moment when the embarrassing exit from Afghanistan, confusion about how to manage the Delta variant of Covid-19 and a new border refugee crisis have tanked his public support.

With the gap between American public disapproval (49%) and approval (45.6%) at its widest since he took office, Biden's political honeymoon is over, and he is facing criticism from members of his own party as well as Republicans.
