Declassified US documents strengthen the argument of some expert Russian and foreign policy scholars who argue that the US mismanaged the end of the cold war in a way that has led to unnecessary levels of tension between the US and Russia and a renewed arms race, writes John Matisonn.

Recently declassified US documents confirm Russian President Vladimir Putin's claim this week that the US is violating an undertaking made at the end of the Cold War not to expand the military alliance NATO eastward towards Russia.
