The furore around the Lindiwe Sisulu debacle is a harbinger of what is to come this year, and we need to be ready for it, writes Mandy Wiener.
South Africa is a land rich with conspiracy theories, fantastical stories, and embellished rumour dressed up as fact. It is a country where the capital's most prominent newspaper with a long and proud history can persistently publish an outrageous and laughable series of reports about the now world-famous decuplet babies, the "Tembisa Ten", that is devoid of evidence or rationality.
But, it is also a country in which investigative journalists have consistently held power to account, have revealed the large scale capture and looting of the state through the Guptaleaks treasure trove of emails and have repeatedly dug the dirt on politicians who have fed at the trough at the expense of taxpayers, when law enforcement agencies have failed to do so.
