To lay the blame for the country's corruption problem on one person would be to misrepresent the nature and extent of it, writes Mandy Wiener.

In March 2018, former president Thabo Mbeki gave an interview to Spain's el Pais national newspaper. It was just a month after Jacob Zuma was recalled as president and a couple of weeks after it was announced that Zuma would be facing fresh criminal charges.

In it, Mbeki explained that what happened during the Zuma years in South Africa was a systemic problem, the entrenchment of corruption.
