Several incidents in the last few weeks indicate that the police service needs more capacity and to sharpen its intelligence skills. But, before it does that it needs to build public trust and confidence, because the recent embarrassing blunders will only erode this further, writes Mandy Wiener.

On Monday morning this week, National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole, whose own job security is somewhat tenuous currently, answered questions about the July unrest in the country. He was testifying at the South African Human Rights Commission's hearings from his hotel room in Turkey, where he is attending an Interpol conference.
