While the process of the Zondo Commission may not prove to be cathartic for the ANC, it indeed is serving that purpose for the greater South African public watching it play out, writes Mandy Wiener.

When ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa appeared at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture last week, he spoke about how the process was cathartic for the party. Facing up to its errors and partially conceding to its failure to act against corruption was intended to be a ‘process of renewal’ for the ruling party. Not everyone believed him about the renewal and catharsis.

Commentators were quick to say that while the President was saying the right things, in reality, there was little work being done in practice to confront and self-reflect within the organisation. It was not an entire mea culpa. Be that as it may, while the process of the Zondo Commission may not prove to be cathartic for the ANC, it indeed is serving that purpose for the greater South African public watching it play out.
