Growing Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy in South Africa has been fuelled by comments made by office bearers, including Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, ANC leaders and influential characters, writes Mandy Wiener.
A lot of attention is being focused on whether South Africa can get enough Covid-19 vaccine into the country and whether it can do so quickly. Not enough is being placed on what will happen when it is available. Will enough people agree to take it?
The government's ambitious plan is to vaccinate 67% of the population this year in order to achieve herd immunity. As the health minister said in Parliament this week, at the very minimum 40 million people need to receive the vaccine if the programme is to be successful.
