It is that absence of effective opposition that makes people such as those in my village, who may be riled by the arrogance of local ANC leaders but sees no alternative in the opposition, writes Mbhazima Shilowa.
Last weekend, I attended two funerals in Limpopo. One for my niece and the other for my nephew. The first funeral started at 06:15 and two hours later we were at the graveyard. All health protocols were observed, including sanitising of the mourners and the microphones as well as physical distancing. By 10:00, everyone had left, except for close family members.
The second funeral also started on time. Having elected to start with the burial, we were at the graveyard by 06:30. It was decided that after the burial rites mourners should depart for a service, which shouldn't last more than the stipulated two hours, while a few remained to cover the grave.
