If the DA is going to regain its footing, with just three weeks to go before the municipal elections, it will need to return to its core message to the majority who are fed up with the lack of service from those who were elected into power in 2016, writes Mbhazima Shilowa.

With just three weeks to go to the 2016 municipal elections, the juggernaut of the blue machine was in full swing with a single message and unity of purpose. The DA had its sights set on the key metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, which it wanted to wrestle from the ANC.

While it is true that it rode on the scandals facing then president Jacob Zuma and the ANC, such as the Nkandla debacle and Gauteng residents' dissatisfaction with e-tolls, the DA was also able to sell itself to the electorate as an alternative to the ANC that was capable of delivering basic services the ANC had long ignored.
