Mbhazima Shilowa writes that opposition parties should take note of the recent success of the ANC in by-elections and instead of constantly complaining about the governing party, bring their own plan of action to the table.

Based on the recent by-election results – and depending on who you speak to – the opposition is on the road to nowhere in the upcoming local government elections in October this year.

Pundits agree that by-elections are generally characterised by a low voter turnout and should therefore not be used as a yardstick for predictions in countrywide elections. However, they agree that depending on the number of by-elections and the outcomes, it is possible to see trends emerge on how the electorate perceives various parties at a localised level.
