A careful analysis of the statements by DA leaders may give the impression that they are prepared to substitute the DA's role as an official opposition for an official supporter of an idealistic, faction-free ANC led by Cyril Ramaphosa, writes Mpumelelo Mkhabela 

Shortly before the 2019 national elections, Helen Zille, who was then Premier of the DA-governed Western Cape and power broker in the official opposition, suggested that the party could work with the President Cyril Ramaphosa faction of the ANC.

Zille described the Ramaphosa group as constitutionalists and non-racialists. This group was at odds with the radical economic transformation faction of Ace Magashule, the ANC's secretary-general, and the populist EFF.
