Parliament of South Africa.
Parliament of South Africa.
Ashraf Hendricks, GroundUp

Parliament's role in our democracy is central. It keeps elected leaders in check, it passes legislation, and is a forum for national debate. The nomination as speaker of Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who was fired as minister of defence, will only further damage an already frail institution, writes Pieter du Toit.

The decision by the ANC's parliamentary caucus to nominate dismissed Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to become the speaker of Parliament is a disgrace.
