Despite promises from Cyril Ramaphosa, there are no indications from the ANC at local government level that the party is attempting to turn around the ship. Because if that was the case, the ANC might have started to act on the Auditor-General's stock-standard annual plea to urgently improve governance and ensure accountability, writes Pieter du Toit.

Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa told prospective voters how ANC-run councils will be run differently if the party is re-elected to govern at local level.

This time, he said, the ANC will ensure that their representatives are able to understand how councils and municipalities work, the party will keep a close watch on performance, and it will ensure that councillors will execute their mandates as public representatives.
