If the ANC wants to arrest the slide, it must play a constructive and effective role as an opposition that keeps a check on the executive without hampering service delivery and be honest with itself why it was rejected in such large numbers by voters, writes Pieter du Toit.

The ANC, South Africa's governing party since 1994, has over the years commanded a presence at the IEC's National Results Operational Centre at the old Pretoria showgrounds (which, it must be said, is not much more than a stuffy old shed).

Its leaders have swaggered around on the operations floor where all political parties have their party representatives seated, with computer monitors at every party's workstation where they scour results as they come in. They have held court as journalists try to extract something useful and have patronised smaller parties, guffawing as those on the edges of electoral extinction gasp for votes.
