Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe.
Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe.
Raymond Morare

Gwede Mantashe is a political enforcer and an ANC ideologue. It makes no sense having him in charge of energy and mining policy - unless of course internal ANC politics trumps everything, writes Pieter du Toit.

Gwede Mantashe was one of the strongmen who marched beside Jacob Zuma as a coalition consisting of figures like Blade Nzimande, Zwelinzima Vavi, Mathews Phosa, Fikile Mbalula and Jackson Mthembu rose to power at the ANC's elective conference outside Polokwane in 2007 and changed this country forever.

After being elected Zuma's secretary-general, replacing fellow unionist and miner Kgalema Motlanthe who was elevated to deputy president, Mantashe victoriously bestrode the Mankweng Campus of the University of Limpopo at Turfloop (where the 2007 conference was held), and blustered his way through interviews as he set about explaining the agenda of the Zuma leadership.
