On Wednesday, Ace Magashule came out in support of Jacob Zuma while Julius Malema asked to have tea with the former president. Pieter du Toit writes that this might prove to be a destructive alliance.

There shouldn't be any illusion that South Africa's political environment entails the normal cut and thrust of public affairs.

Politicians in this country are by and large engaged in the pursuit and retention of power – not in service of a higher civic calling or deference to the Constitution of the land.
