A man who allegedly robbed a scholar of her cellphone was apparently attacked by an angry mob in Macassar Village after committing the crime.
It is believed the irate residents pursued the alleged suspect and pelted him with stones and bricks in a brutal attack in which he was injured and lost a lot of blood around 15:00 last Friday afternoon (20 January).
An anonymous source said some residents witnessed the man accost a young girl, attack her and rob her of her cellphone, before running off. They immediately set off down Link Avenue in Macassar in pursuit of the suspect.
A video of the suspect lying on the ground, his T-shirt covering his face, did the rounds on social media. It depicts some community members instruct the suspect to remain lying where he is, presumably until police and paramedics arrive. Macassar police confirmed they are investigating an attempted murder against the suspect.
A police spokersperson said the man, believed to be in his 30s, physically attacked the learner when she refused to hand over her cellphone, but someone who witnessed the attack shouted for help.
“That is when the large crowd gathered and started pelting the man with stones,” the spokesperson said.
Macassar police confirmed no further cases have been registered.
The man was taken to Tygerberg Hospital after the attack and has yet to be questioned by police.
