Locals are advised of changes to the scheduled closure of a section of Clarence Drive as previously communicated.
According to a media statement released by the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works on Wednesday (1 February), the date of project commencement and closure arrangements have been amended for the convenience of road users.
On Tuesday (31 January), DistrictMail and Helderberg Gazette reported that the scenic coastal route will be cordoned off between the Grille Shack restaurant and Steenbras Dam Mountain Pass for emergency slope stabilisation repairs from 08:00 to 18:00 every day as of Wednesday 1 until Thursday 16 February (“Clarence Drive temporarily closed for emergency works”, News24).
The statement communicating the update, however, divulged that Clarence Drive will be closed from 08:00 to 18:00 every day, with the exception of Sundays, from Monday 6 to Tuesday 21 February.
During the stop-and-go closures which will be in place, access to the pump diner will be possible only from the Rooi Els side.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.
The urgent works were triggered by heavy rains experienced on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 December last year. The project has been championed by Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd and is scheduled to be completed in March.
“We know that residents and visitors to the Western Cape enjoy using this scenic road between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els,” the statement read. “For that reason we assessed the safety of the road and decided to allow single-lane traffic on Clarence Drive during the festive season. Now that the holidays are over we are undertaking slope stabilisation repairs to restore full two-way traffic along this important road.”
The City of Cape Town have also communicated that the Steenbras Nature Reserve and Steenbras Gorge (Crystal Pools) hiking trail are open to the public despite the planned roadworks along Clarence Drive. Therefore, those wanting to visit the reserve are advised to approach from Rooi Els’ side.
