Football is set to take centre stage at the Danie Craven Stadium tomorrow (Friday 27 January) when Stellenbosch FC plays host to bitter rivals Cape Town City in the eighth edition of the Cape Derby.

The hosts head into the match searching for their first victory in 2023, meeting an opponent the club has historically fared well against, having won four and lost just two of their previous seven encounters.

For Stellies head coach Steve Barker, the highly anticipated derby presents an opportunity for the winelands-based side to get back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership. “Yes, it is a long streak of not winning, but the longer the streak the more likely you will get a win eventually,” Barker said.

“There is no better game than one at home in the derby at the Danie Craven Stadium on a Friday evening for us to turn things around. We have traditionally done very well against Cape Town City and I am expecting a massive game and trusting that we can get a win.”

The encounter could also see fans witness new signing André de Jong in action for the first time after the New Zealand international striker was unveiled by the club last week following his transfer from Royal AM. “I am very pleased and excited to be joining Stellenbosch FC,” De Jong said.

“I have always felt that they are a team that plays a positive and entertaining style of football. The club, administration, coach Barker and the players have all been very welcoming and made me feel right at home already. It’s a beautiful part of the country and I’m really looking forward to pulling on the Stellenbosch shirt.”

Kick-off is at 19:30 and tickets for the match are on offer at R60 for a Grand Stand seat and R40 for the Open Stand option, available for purchase at www.webtickets.co.za or any Pick n Pay outlet, including PnP Liquor, PnP Clothing and PnP Express stores.

Free parking is available at the Coetzenburg Centre for Grand Stand ticket-holders and at the Welgevallen fields for Open Stand ticket-holders.
