Around R4 million will be needed to restore business at the Queens Casino and Hotel in Komani, while scores of informal settlement residents have been evacuated, following flooding in the town.

Komani was showered with rains on February 8, leading to flooding of the small troubled town.

Residents from Rhawutini Informal Settlement had to be evacuated to the loca Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Center.

Boysi Zingitwa, a Rhawutini resident, said the floods were sudden and dangerous.

"I have lost material to the value of around R5 000. I've lost l my furniture and I don't even work. We haven't eaten since last night, we are asking government to help us," Zingitwa said.

Russell Osner, manager at Queens Casino and Hotel, said the establishment was 100% affected by the floods.

"We are going to close for about three months. The damage at this stage is around R4 million,"Osner said.

Chris Hani District Municipality has said that the Bonkolo dam has reached full capacity and automatically water exits through spill ways. "The dam infrastructure is still in tact with no signs of collapse," the Municipality said on its Facebook page.

CHDM Disaster management team, together with Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality and relevant stakeholders remain on the ground to assess the situation.
