Players from the Sarah Baartman District Chess Union represented their area with honour this school holiday, at the Eastern Cape Provincial Chess Championship in Komani, from September 30 to October 2.
Three other districts participated in the team events, namely the Nelson Mandela Bay Chess Union, Chris Hani Chess Association and OR Tambo Chess Association, with individual participation from Buffalo City and Amathole.
The team, consisting of learners from schools from all over the district, is a developing union that participated in this tournament for the first time this year. They excelled in the tournament and returned home having done exceptionally well, with having 44 players receiving Eastern Cape colours (22 boys and 22 girls).
They received top placings in various age groups, as well as being able to boast two individual provincial champions in their respective age groups.
The president of the Sarah Baartman District Chess Union, Petrus Stuurman, said that they were extremely proud of all the children who participated in this tournament.
“The union would like to thank the following individuals and businesses who contributed to the team and their efforts to participate in the chess tournament, namely, Kouga Municipality, Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Theunis Saayman from Jack’s Bagels, Jack’s Bagels HQ, Barry’s Transport and Mia van Dalen from Old Mutual,” Stuurman said.
The team will next compete in the Interprovincial Chess Festival (provincial and regional championships 2022) that will take place in Kimberley from December 15-19.
