The K9 Unit in Nelson Mandela Bay are continuing their efforts in clamping down on criminals targeting vehicles within the Humewood policing precinct.

On Wednesday at approximately 08:30, they received and followed up on information of suspects jumping over the fence into a premises in Forest Hill. It is alleged that these criminals focus on stealing vehicle parts. On arrival, the members realised that the suspects were inside the premises of the police garage. They were warned to come out and after failing to do so,  K9, Tarrik, was released to search for the suspects. He apprehended one suspect who was hiding under a vehicle.

The suspect (26) was arrested on charges of malicious damage to property, attempted theft from a motor vehicle and trespassing.  Upon further investigation, it was established that parts were stripped from the inside of the vehicle. A screwdriver was also confiscated.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that due to the rampant theft in the area, K9 Unit members continued to patrol in Forest Hill and on Thursday at approximately 22:45 while patrolling, they noticed two suspects removing the wheels of a VW Amarok.

"When the suspects refused to give in to their request to come out, K9, Mufasa, was released to search for them. One suspect, aged 23 years old, was found hiding underneath a vehicle. The second suspect jumped over the fence and bolted. The members confiscated a cross wheel spanner, L-shape wheel spanner, backpack, carjack and a hammer," she said.

The suspects were detained on charges of theft from a motor vehicle and trespassing.

Also on Wednesday at approximately 11:45, K9 Unit members recovered a stolen white Mitsubishi in Sakwatsha Street, NU8, Motherwell. The vehicle was found abandoned and impounded for further investigation. It was stolen during a business robbery on Tuesday, January 24 in Kalusha street, Ikamvelihle.
