The annual Community 10s organised by Hamediehs Rugby Club in Athlone will be held on Saturday 25 February for seniors and Sunday 26 February for juniors at City Park.
Tygerberg is the current champion of the tens and teams will have their work cut out to dethrone them. They are also the champions of the Score 7s, organised by Western Province Rugby Union, at the end of last year.
“The 10s is our way of giving back to the community as we know clubs are well supported by their local rugby club. This year, the tournament is over two days to include juniors as well. We are inviting clubs from all over the Western Cape to take part and they must keep in mind, they will be representing their community at the tournament. No registration fee is charged to participate,” says Mogammad Adams, a member of the organising committee.
The juniors will get the opportunity to take part in a competition on a Sunday and he promises it will be a fun day for old and young.
“The junior tournament is a first for the 10s and I am looking forward to seeing who is going to become a big name later in his life after starting as a junior at our tournament,” he says.
Adams says the competition is based on five key principles on which the club was built: honesty, obedience, generosity, perseverance and forgiveness.
“We’re basically taking the 10s rugby platform and sharing it with the community. The invitation to clubs to participate is to hopefully have one team per community represented. If you feel your club is the ideal team to represent your community, don’t hesitate to drop me an email. I’ll forward you a registration form and as mentioned previously, there is no registration fee,” says Adams.
Teams that participated in the last tournament were Collegians, Vineyards, Sir Lowrians, Hamediehs, Rangers, Morning Star, Silvertree, Callies, Primrose, Goodwood, Masiphumelele, Progress, Manenberg Rangers, Tygerberg, Raithby and Gardens Tech.
As soon as the teams are finalised the draw will be published as well as more information.
