Monte Vista Primary School turned 60 years on Sunday 22 January and plans to celebrate this milestone all year long.
The school opened its doors on 22 January 1963 with 52 learners and by December of the same year, there were 63 learners on the roll.
The first school committee members were elected In 1963.
Now, 60 years later another council has been selected. The council of 2023 went on a council camp during the first weekend of the term. The inauguration took place on Friday 27 January and is considered significant to be the group selected to lead the school in its 60th year of existence.
“We have 25 learners on the council who will all complete their first level of first aid training soon,” says Rene Botes, a Grade 1 teacher.
The school plans to incorporate the official birthday celebration during the year and celebrate it at their annual Family Kaskar Day being held in the second term. Later in the year, the school will also present its biennial revue, the first after lockdown.
Quality teaching
“We have a few teachers on staff that were learners at the school. Some of them started teaching here as soon as they qualified. We are more of a family than just your run-of-the-mill school,” Botes says.
“We have learners whose parents have been taught by the same educators as they are being taught by,” Botes adds.
Botes explained that the staff has become a lot younger during the last 10 years, bringing with them innovation and excitement to teaching.
Botes says: “we carry with us the knowledge of teachers that have taught for more than 20 years and still do some things led by their example.”
