The Masque Theatre will offer up some of the province’s top young, experimental and cutting-edge theatre makers at their inaugural New Talent Weekend from Friday 13 May to Sunday 15 May.
The new festival was born out of the desire to provide a space for undiscovered talents to showcase their new ideas and present never-before-seen works.
The theatre put out a call for applications earlier in the year and the response was a wide range of different and unique ideas.
(Un)locked?, The Black Smith, August, With/Hold, Greenbeasts, Wait, Die Laaitie and Rooi Vlaggie will be performed at regular intervals throughout the weekend.
Written and directed by Maggi Fernando, with choreography by Mbovu Malinga, (Un)locked? explores themes of loss, identity, acceptance and fear, by focusing on the internal and external journeys that young girls experience at some point in their daily lives.
Raine Waring stars in her one-woman play Wait, revealing the struggles of a woman imprisoned by the distorted views of herself. Wait, speaks about life’s inhibiting ways of hindering people from being the ultimate versions of themselves.
In Greenbeasts, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath imagine themselves an Iago/Emilia love story, subverting the idea of the tragic hero, the tragic story – humanising the villain.
Performed by Kate Pinchuck, Ameera Najwa Mills, Desmond Kannemeyer (on guitar) and Wesley Wolhuter (on cello), With/Hold sees choreographer Magdalena de Beer looking at themes of dependence, independence, co-dependence and interdependence, inviting the audience to join this interrogation of emotional and physical attachments.
George The Blacksmith encourages audiences to love themselves with his stand-up comedy #TheyMustLaugh, while Seabreeze Productions tells the story of a lonely teenage boy in Die Laaitie.
Shaun Thomas and Jeanne Odendal look at how South Africans relate to each other and their inability to see “warning signs” through various sketches in Rooi Vlaggie.
August follows the life of a boy in annual instalments after a tragic childhood event. Writer and director Kimberly Buckle asks how the event affects his psychology, his relationships and his belief system and the control the incident wields over August’s life.
The productions range in running time from 30 min to just under an hour and tickets vary from R50 for a single performance, R80 for a double bill, R250 for a day pass and R400 for a full weekend pass.
