Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring the 2020 winners and finalists of the Santam Women of the Future Awards, in association with FAIRLADY and TRUELOVE. Entrepreneurs and SMEs are the lifeblood of South Africa’s economy, and we wholeheartedly support these incredible female entrepreneurs. We believe in providing a platform on which to showcase their incredible businesses.
The nine business women who will be featured have inspired us with their entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to seeing their business ideas through, and the sheer resilience and determination that they have shown during this unprecedented time.
Sibongile Mdlakaof KwaZulu Beverages
2020 Rising Star
Sibongile Mdlaka put her biotechnology degree to good use when she formulated a healthy energy drink in 2018. ‘As a postgraduate research student, I was lways busy, and I neglected my health,’ she says. ‘Energy drinks that are on the shelves are a big no because the high sugar content and caffeine content eventually make your body crash.’ So Sibongile formulated an energy drink that’s low in sugar and caffeine, and provides the body with sustained energy. In November 2018, her energy drink, Vibra, won gold at the fifth Cairo International Exhibition of Innovation. In 2019, her company, KwaZulu Beverages, started making sales to taverns, bars and local sporting events. However, the Covid-19 pandemic affected her 2020 growth plans and she had to adapt. ‘Despite the challenges, we have turned to street vending to keep the business on the move.’
