Mountains, wetlands, birds… There are many reasons to visit Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, but for the Smit couple, owners of the Pot & Gieter Guesthouse, the Afrikaans film Vrou Soek Boer was the deciding factor.
“The film was set in town,” says Lizet Smit. “We watched it and I told my husband JJ that I had to move to Wakkerstroom – it looked idyllic.”
Idyllic is exactly the right word. There are no traffic lights in town; instead, goats and cattle wander the (mostly dirt) streets, past old willow trees that sway in the wind and past guineafowl going kek-kekkek on nearly every gate.
