Join us and Bhejane 4x4 Adventures on a six-day, guided self-drive tour of Sani Pass, Katse Dam, Maletsunyane Falls and Thaba Bosiu.
Day 1: Sani Mountain Lodge
Our adventure starts in Himeville, a town in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. We meet at the Stone House Café. We spend the rest of the day tackling the legendary Sani Pass. After clearing customs on the South African side, we have a picnic lunch and then slowly make our way up the pass. There will be more than enough time to enjoy the scenery and take pictures.
Our accommodation for the night is the cosy Sani Mountain Lodge. It feels like you’re on top of the world at this lodge, which is built on the edge of the Drakensberg and affords stunning views into KwaZulu-Natal.
Day 2: Ficksburg
Our next overnight stop is Ficksburg – our route will take us over the highest roads in southern Africa. We cross the Senqu River, which becomes the Orange River when it enters South Africa, and drive past the highest mines in southern Africa.
Thanks to these mines, the road networks in the area have been upgraded, making our travels easier.
Day 3: Mohale Lodge
After a big breakfast, we do a guided tour of the Katse Dam wall and learn more about the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. We spend the rest of the day driving a circular route around the dam, with a picnic lunch along the way to Mohale Dam and our accommodation at Mohale Lodge.
Day 4: Ramabanta
Today we traverse mountain passes with names like God Help Me and Blue Mountain. We will then visit Thaba Bosiu, a natural fortress where King Moshoeshoe, the founder of the Basotho people, took his young nation. They lived here for many years, protected from the Zulus, English and Boers.
In the late afternoon we arrive in the small town of Ramabanta, where we stay over at the Trading Post Lodge for two nights and are spoilt with home-made food.
Day 5: Ramabanta
We take it easy today. We’ll visit Maletsunyane Falls at Semonkong, where the water drops 192 m down a cliff. After a picnic lunch, we return to the lodge to relax for the afternoon. There are some lovely walks in the area, and you can go horse riding.
Day 6: Departure
After our last breakfast together, we make our way towards Maseru. We drive around Thaba Bosiu before we say our goodbyes at the visitor centre near Maseru Bridge border post, and everyone goes their own way.
