Cape Town - A Johannesburg Zoo worker has received an inaugural award for conservation work at the zoo.

Senior manager for Nutrition & Environment Lorna Fuller was awarded with the Dave Morgan Conservation Award that seeks to recognise carers who contribute the conservation of endangered species.

The award was made at a recent Animal Keepers Association of Africa (AKAA) conference and Fuller was recognised for her 20 years of service which includes hand rearing several species of animals.

"I was very humbled to receive the 2013 AKAA Conservation award at the conference this year. It is always wonderful to receive acknowledgement for your contribution to the Zoo and to conservation efforts in general. It is also a huge incentive to do more projects and encourage more colleagues in the future," said Fuller.

The Johannesburg Zoo was established in 1904 and comprises 81ha in Forest Town, outside Johannesburg.

The zoo has had some success in breeding white lions and is the only institution to have successfully bred Siberian Tigers.

"It feels good that our work is being recognized as zoo conservation work goes largely unacknowledged," said Letta Madlala, Zoo Brand & Communications manager.

Some of the projects at the zoo include the conservation of the oribi antelope, wattled crane, frog, vulture and indigenous sheep species.

The goal of these programmes is to re-introduce them back into the wild once the populations are sustainable
