More than 3 000 confirmed monkeypox cases have been recorded in more than 40 non-endemic countries (where outbreaks don't usually occur), including the UK, US, Spain, Portugal, and Germany.
The virus, which causes a mild viral infection, has not led to any reported deaths in these countries. Monkeypox occurs commonly in 11 African countries, including remote parts of central and west Africa.
On 23 June, Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced that the first case of monkeypox was detected in South Africa in a 30-year-old man from Gauteng. On 28 June, a second case was detected in a 32-year-old man from Cape Town.
