Eskom chief executive André de Ruyter has spoken out for the first time since news broke of his resignation on Wednesday, saying that any notion of remaining in the job had become untenable due to a lack of political support.

He also said the state of the company and its current form had made the job he occupied for almost three years impossible.

"The job of Eskom group chief executive in its current configuration is impossible. There is a lack of support and when this became clear to me, it became fundamentally untenable (to continue) given the repeated attacks on me and Eskom’s strategy by senior members of government," De Ruyter told News24.
